JoyaBrava is a non-profit trade union association that gathers more than 30 contemporary Chilean jewellers, who work the jewellery as a means of artistic expression,  investigating and experimenting with materials, concepts and processes.

MONICA PEREZ-MONOCO

I was born under the name of Mónica Pérez Gutiérrez. I grew up in the countryside, in the central valley of Chile, where my companions and best friends were the sun, the aromas, the horses and the cats. (... and they still are).   I studied design at the PUC, Chile and then I specialized in Jewellery in England, where I obtained a Master of Arts, as indicated by my title, but in my opinion where I won wings and freedom. Far from my country, I had the conviction that design was my thing and jewelry was the instrument to develop myself. The fundamental principles of my work are color, movement and contrast. Using the kaleidoscope as a metaphor, I combine traditional materials with innovative elements, often forgotten or unusual for jewelry. Since 2002 I incorporated horse hair handicraft in my work, becoming my mark, my contribution, my most fertile land and also my karma. I am the precursor of the application of this craft in the current Chilean jewellery. My work aims to make a proposal, a suggestion, to provoke a reading between lines that always propitiates a personal interpretation on the part of the person who wears my jewels and who observes them. In this sense, my works transcend the value of the material, because they are personal artistic expressions of those who use them. I believe them and they then abandon me. It does not affect me, because above all values, the one with the most respect is Freedom.
